Feeling Left Behind by AI? Here's Where to Start
With artificial intelligence advancing at such a rapid pace, it's easy to feel like you're falling behind — especially if you're not someone who works in tech.
But here's the thing: learning the basics of AI is becoming increasingly important for almost everyone, regardless of industry or role. It's not just a trend. AI is fundamentally changing the way we work, communicate, and make decisions. And with organisations of all sizes collecting and acting on data, an understanding of AI is fast becoming a standard part of working life.
The good news is that you don't need a computer science degree to get started. The learning curve is more approachable than it might seem, and there are plenty of resources designed specifically for beginners.
Where to Begin
A solid starting point usually involves three things: understanding some basic prerequisite skills, getting familiar with core AI concepts, and having a realistic learning plan you can follow at your own pace.
Prerequisite skills tend to include things like data literacy — understanding how data is collected, organised, and interpreted — as well as a general comfort with digital tools. You don't need to be able to code, but having some familiarity with how information is structured helps.
From there, the key concepts worth knowing include things like machine learning, how AI models are trained, and how automation is being applied across different industries. Again, you don't need to go deep on any of this straight away — even a surface-level understanding puts you ahead of most people.
The most important thing is just to start. AI isn't going anywhere, and getting comfortable with it early will serve you well — whatever your career looks like.
